Domestic violence impacts every part of our society.
Chances are, someone you know--your friend, mother, sister, co-worker, or neighbor--
is a victim of domestic violence. We need everyone's help in ending violence
in our communities. Here is a list of steps you can take to help.
Educate Yourself: There are many myths when it comes to the issue
of domestic violence. Our staff is available to do presentations for your
organization free of charge, or to answer questions on an individual basis.
Make Information Available: Have brochures in your personnel office
or waiting area. If you need brochures, call your local battered woman's program.
Take Violence Seriously: Millions of women are assaulted every year and
many die at the hands of their abuser. If a woman tells you about her abuse,
believe her. You may be the first one she has told, and how you react to what
she tells you is vital. Never blame her for what is happening or underestimate
her fear of potential danger.
Listen To Her: Don't force the issue, but allow her to confide in you in a way
that feels comfortable to her. Respect her right to make her own decisions.
Check Yourself: Know your own biases and how they affect others. Keep
in mind whose behavior you are focused on.
Refer Her To Your Local Advocacy Program: They can offer her safety,
advocacy, support, legal information, and referrals.
