Hi everyone! Wow, how time flies by and now fall is upon us. The children return back to school, the leaves on the trees turn into many different colors, and Fall also symbolizes NATIONAL DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH that is held each October.

History of Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Oct 81The first Day of Unity was observed
DVAM evolved from the first Day of Unity sponsored by NCADV in order to connect battered women’s advocates across the nation who were working to end violence against women and their children. The Day of Unity soon became a week when a varied and diverse range of activities was conducted that carried a common theme: mourning those who died because of domestic violence, celebrating those who have survived and connecting those who work to end violence.
Oct 87The first Domestic Violence Awareness Month was held,
The first national toll-free domestic violence hotline was begun.
1989The first Domestic Violence Awareness Commemorative legislation was passed by the US Congress (legislation has passed every year since.)
Oct 94NCADV, in cooperation with Ms. Magazine, created “Remember My Name,” a national registry to increase public awareness of domestic violence deaths.

NCADV continues to collect information on incidents of women and their friends or family members who have been killed by an intimate partner and produces a poster each October for DVAM which lists the names received in the preceding year. If you know of individuals who should be remembered in this special project, please contact the NCADV national office at PO Box 18749, Denver, CO 80218-0749 or call your local WRAP office.

During the month of October, WRAP of Lincoln County is asking that everyone please turn on your porch light or light a candle on Monday October 11, 1999 to honor the National Day of Unity.

WRAP of Lincoln County will also be setting baskets out throughout Lincoln County businesses, medical clinics, courthouses, etc. with purple and white ribbons in it. Please everyone, take a ribbon and wear it throughout the month of October to honor the survivors of domestic violence and to remember those who are still living with domestic violence and those who have not survived.

WRAP of Lincoln County will also be available for anyone in the area who would like a presentation for their community, church, school, etc. group. Please call me at 507-694-1123.
