October is upon us once again and it is National Domestic Violence Month, a time
when we as advocates will use our voices to get the message out that “It’s my right to live free
from Domestic Violence.” I ask our communities to take part in making it their business to promote National Domestic Violence Month by making it stop when you hear that yelling, throwing things
and crying. Make the call to 911. What do you have to lose? Because if you don’t call, you
do lose—you’ll live with the afterthoughts of “I should have called,” “I wish I would have told someone” or sharing when it was too late and thinking “I thought it wasn’t any of my business.” It is your business. Every day examples are set forth in front of our children and when children grow to adults they believe this is acceptable. It’s called learned behavior. And when you make that call, children learn that we all deserve to be safe from violence and treated with respect.
