Domestic Violence confuses, isolates and terrorizes its victims. Sometimes people forget that abuse happens in gay and lesbian relationships also, and that the effects of the abuse are the same. When victims of violence feel unsafe about revealing details of their intimate lives they can be even further isolated and at risk. Below is a list of ways you can be an ally for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) members of your community.

QUALITIES OF A GLBT ALLY

An Ally to GLBT individuals is a person who...

....believes that it is in her/his self-interest to be an ally to GLBT individuals.
....has worked to develop an understanding of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender issues, and who Is comfortable with their knowledge of gender identity and sexual orientation.
....is comfortable saying the words: Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender.
....understands how homophobia and other patterns of oppression operate, and is willing to identify oppressive acts and challenge the oppressive behaviors of others.
....works to be an ally to all oppressed groups.
....is quick to take pride in, and appreciate successes in combating homophobia and heterosexism.
...."comes out of the closet" with his/her support and ally status.
....chooses to align with GLBT individuals and represents their needs especially when they are unable to safely do so themselves.
....expects to make some mistakes, and does not use any feelings of guilt to become an ineffective ally.
...promotes a sense of community with GLBT individuals, teaches others about the importance of these communities, encourages others to provide advocacy, and discusses the issue with clergy.
...is not afraid to be called the same names, or to be harassed in the same ways as those they are acting as an ally for.
...is able to address/confront individuals without being defensive, sarcastic, or threatening.
....is willing to tell their family to stop the name calling.
