May 5, 10 AM - 5 PM       Clay Creations: Traditional Native American Pottery
Experience making traditional Native American pottery throughout the day. Techniques demonstrated include coil and pinch pots. Participants can create their own pottery to bring home.

May 19, 10 AM - 5 PM       Thunder On The Prairie: Understanding Minnesota's Weather
Learn some simple weather predicting skills through hands-on activities for all ages. Visitors will learn to understand basic weather terminology, weather charts, and weather folklore.

June 16, 10 AM - 5 PM       Archaeology Discovery Day
Experience the archaeological process of identifying stone tools and the historic process of making them, and take part in a simulated archaeological excavation. For those who want to be (or wanted to be) an archaeologist. Watch as a flintknapper creates stone tools.

June 23, 10 AM - 8 PM       Pretty As A Picture: Prairie Photography, Paint, and Pencils
Join local artist David Strom and bring your sketchpad and easel and enjoy the beauty of one of Minnesota's most unique praines. There will be artist activities designed for children. Or bring your camera and join local photographer Shelley Olson to receive instruction on photographing prairie plants and learn about equipment. Explore landscape, close-up, and lighting techniques.

July 7, 10 AM - 8 PM       Animals and Birds Free For All: Family Day at the Petroglyphs
Enjoy free admission and experience the wildlife of Jeffers Petroglyphs! Local bird watchers lead walking tours searching for birds singing their prairie melodies. Visitors will also learn about prairie animals through illustrations, pelts, activities, and making plaster animal tracks.

View the petroglyphs when they are best seen - at dusk. Enjoy a twilight prairie tour to leam about animals of the night. View and discuss both Native American and European constellations. View stars and planets through a telescope.

July 21, 10 AM - 8 PM       Pte Oyate: Buffalo People
Learn about the daily lives of the American Indians who survived on America's prairies through their close relationship with the bison. Enjoy demonstrations and hands-on activities to leam about the resources available from the buffalo. Visitors will explore the process for tanning hides. The home of the Buffalo People is a technological wonder. Made from buffalo hides, the tipi is warm, cool, dry, and mobile, and it has protected people for centuries. Learn about how the tipi is made and put up. Play Native American games in a tipi.

July 28, 10 AM - 5 PM       Made In America: American Indian Technology
July 29, 10 AM - 5 PM

Explore the world of American Indian technology through demonstrations and hands-on activities.
  • Stone Tools: Watch a flintknapper making knives, arrowheads, and other stone tools. Learn to make them yourself.
  • American Indian Textiles: Watch a gathering bag being made from native plants. Use native plants to make textiles.
  • Atlatl Competition: Try your hand at throwing spears with an atlatl, an ancient hunting tool. Throw at targets including a life-like buffalo and deer. Make your own atlatl!
  • Copper Tools: Watch a demonstration of making spear points from native copper using stone tools.

August 11, 10 AM - 8 PM       Butterflies are Free: Family Day at the Petroglyphs
Enjoy free admission and explore the world of butterflies. Explore the rock carvings and learn more about the people who made the carvings and the prairie they lived on. Visitors can pack the travois, throw an atlatl and participate in Native American games.

September 8, 10 AM - 8 PM       Star Track: The Nightly Path of the Constellations
Bring your blanket, lie in the prairie, and gaze at one of Minnesota’s darkest skies and learn about constellations through stories from cultures around the globe.

September 16, 10 AM - 8 PM       Why Do Dogs Smell Each Other's Tails?
Discover how the dog became part of the Native American culture through storytelling. Learn about the daily life and history of dogs indigenous to North America.
