Jeffers Petroglyphs Events and Programs
May 9, 10 AM - 5 PM Archaeology Discovery Day Visitors can "Be Archaeologists". 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. - visitors can take part in a simulated dig. 2 p.m. - visitors are led through the process of identifying projectile points. May 23, 10 AM - 8 PM 7000 Years of History in 70 Minutes 1 p.m., 3 p.m., 4 p.m. - Bringing Light to the Carvings Tours - Experience the Grand Opening of the new interpretive program. Each tour will include selected and shaded carvings which are illuminated with sunlight directed with a mirror. Petroglyphs from different time periods will be focused on. June 6, 10 AM - 5 PM Made in America: Native American Technology Explore the world of Native American Technology through demonstrations and hands-on activities. 1 p.m. - Atlatl Making. 2 p.m. - Adventures in Nature: Making Cordage. 4 p.m. - Pottery. June 13, 10 AM - 5 PM Veterans Family Free Day: Honoring America's Greatest Generation 2 p.m. - Adventures in Nature: Making Cordage. 3 p.m.- Bringing Light to the Carvings Tour. 6:30 p.m. - Twilight Tour: 7000 Year Pictorial History of North America. June 20, 10 AM - 5 PM Naked Eye Astronomy: Daytime Observing Without a Telescope 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. - visitors can make a simple sundial. July 4, 10 AM - 5 PM Made in America: Native American Technology Explore the world of Native American Technology through demonstrations and hands-on activities. 1 p.m. - Watch a flint knapper create stone tools and try making an arrowhead yourself! 4 p.m. - Learn about native plants that can be used to make cordage and make your own cordage. July 11, 10 AM - 5 PM Native American Games Have fun playing games from the past. 1 p.m. - Double Ball 4 p.m. - Awl Game July 18, 9 PM - 11 PM Naked Eye Astronomy: Night Time Observing Learn how people use the patterns of visible stars (constellations) to tell time, navigate long distances, and tell stories. Make a sky ruler to navigate the night sky. July 25, 10 AM - 5 PM Geology Discovery Day Explore the geological wonders of Southwestern Minnesota. A special geology exhibit is available for visitors to view. Learn about Sioux Quartzite and other important rocks of the area. 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. - Short driving tour of interesting local geological sites. August 1, 10 AM - 5 PM Butterflies are Free: Family Day at Jeffers Petroglyphs Enjoy free admission. Hands-on activities and walking tours lead visitors through the extraordinary world of butterflies. 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. - Butterfly Hunt. August 15, 10 AM - 5 PM Made in America: Native American Technology Explore the world of Native American Technology through demonstrations and hands-on activities. 1 p.m. - Watch a flint knapper create stone tools and try your hand atg making an arrowhead. 4 p.m. - Use clay to make traditional Native American coil or pinch pots. September 3, 10 AM - 5 PM Prairie Animal Discovery Day Learn about common animals of of the prairie by touching animal pelts and making plaster tracks. 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. - Animal Tracks. September 17, 18, 19, 6 PM - Midnight Starry Night, Prairie Night Enjoy a twilight prairie tour to learn about the prairie animals of the night. Bring your blanket and gaze at one of Minnesota's darkest skies and learn about constellations through stories from Cultures around the globe. |
