At every event there is a toddler area with games, stories and toys to help keep little ones happy.

Admission is $4 for ages 6 and up. Children under 6 and MNHS members are free.

Interested families are asked to RSVP to the Petroglyphs at 507-628-5591 or jefferspetroglyphs@mnhs.org so enough staff and supplies are on hand.

Families are encouraged to bring a picnic lunch or snacks. There is a gift shop where cold drinks, books, souveniers and some traditional snacks are for sale as well.

Homeschool Days at the JeffersPetroglyphs

2010-2011 Schedule

Monday, October 4
Atlatl Day

Come learn about this ancient spear-throwing tool that has been used around the world for thousands of years. Kids will get to make their own atlatls to take home, can try throwing at the giant buffalo target and can learn how to make their own "darts" (spears), including the physics behind how they work.

Homeschool father and atlatl expert Daryl Hrdlicka will be on hand to teach the day's events, plus he'll have a hands-on display of his own atlatl collection from around the world.

Tuesday, November 9
Geology Day

Kids can learn all about rocks in this fun program that uses everything from chocolate chips to UV lights. Kids will get to pick their own geode to crack open and take home, can run through the rock cycle game, do chocolate chip excavating, view rocks and minerals with special UV lights and more.

Be sure to bring your own fossils and favorite rocks! We'll take turns showing our own collections and learning more about rocks, minerals, fossils and gems.

Monday, March 7, 2011
Prairie Animal Day

Come to the prairie to learn about some of the amazing animals that call the prairie home. We'll have a wide assortment of hides, furs and specimens for kids to handle and learn from, plus lots of crafts and activities to learn more about how prairie animals survive.

Kids will make their own clay tracks, play animal games and listen to animal stories.

Tuesday, May 10, 2011
Art Day

Come join other homeschool families and create some works of art! We'll have a wide assortment of art supplies for kids to use, such as paints, oil pastels, colored pencils and lots of types of paper and canvases.

Bring your camera too, and take a nature walk to capture some of the beauty of the petroglyphs in spring.
