Jeffers Petroglyphs Events and Programs
April 22: Discovering Life on the Prairie, 1 - 4 p.m. Celebrate Earth Day by looking for signs of life on the prairie. Discover how plants and animals in a prairie ecosystem have a connection to each other. May 7: MN Archaeology Week Event - Survivor: 2,000 B.P. Woodland Pottery, Noon - 5 p.m. Visitors will explore the archaeology of the Woodland Period through hands-on reproduction items that will be on display. Visitors can create their own traditional clay pots. May 28: Survivor: 2,000 B.P. Woodland Pottery, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Visitors will explore the archaeology of the Woodland Period through hands-on reproduction items that will be on display. Visitors can create their own traditional clay pots. June 11: Prairie Birds and Animals, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Discover the wonder of the birds and animals found at the Jeffers Petroglyphs. Local birdwatchers will lead a hike at 10 a.m. and help visitors identify common birds found on the prairie. At 2 p.m. visitors will learn about various animals by examining their pelts and making plaster animal tracks. June 25: Tipi Discovery Day, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Learn about the American Indian Tipi with a hands-on presentation with audience participation starting at 2 p.m. July 9: Survivor: 9,000 B.P. - Paleo Dress-Up A hands-on display of the Paleo-Indian period will be available for visitors to view through the day. At 2 p.m. visitors will discover the process of making cordage and try sewing with cordage and/or sinew. Visitors can also dress up with American Indian clothing. July 23: Bison Discovery Day This magnificent animal once roamed the prairies in large numbers. Through hands-on activities visitors will learn about the special adaptations that bison have which made them especially suited for life on the prairie. Visitors will also find out how people, the prairie and bison depended on each other for survival. August 6: Like'n your Lichens Investigate the variety of lichens that live on the Sioux Quartzite rock. At 2 p.m. join a hike to the rockface to examine the types of lichen and learn about the lichen removal project that is in progress. August 20: Survivor: 1,000 B.P. - When the Corn Ripens Discover the archaeology of the Mississippian/Plains Indian Village time period through a hands-on display. Visitors are invited to taste roasted sweet corn and a sample of bean soup (available after 2 p.m.) September 3: Survivor: 5,000 B.P. - Fall Bison Hunt Experience what it was like to prepare for hunting during the Archaic time period. From 1 p.m. -3 p.m. learn how to make your own atlatl (spearthrower) and then use it to throw a spear at our bison target. A flintknapper will demonstrate the process of creating stone projectile points (arrowheads) and help visitors try it for themselves from 3-5 p.m. An interactive display of the Archaic time period will be available to view through the day. September 30 and October 1: Starry Night, Prairie Night, 6 p.m. - Midnight. Enjoy a twilight prairie tour to learn about the prairie animals of the night. (bring a flashlight). When the skies become dark enough, gaze at one of Minnesota's darkest skies and learn about constellations through stories from cultures around the globe. Visitors can view stars and planets through telescopes. |
