Lamplighter

Test Preparation

Preparation for college-entrance examinations (SAT, ACT, PSAT, etc.), elementary proficiency tests, or high-school proficiency tests.

Lamplighter Procedures

When students come to the Lamplighter to study for college-entrance examinations, high-school proficiency tests, or other proficiency tests, they will work with two different teachers. One will help with all the mathematics or mathematics-related subtests. The other will help with all the verbal subtests, such as reading, vocabulary, analogies, and English usage. Instruction takes place on an individual basis -- one teacher with one student. Test workbooks can be purchased at the Lamplighter.

Prior to the first lesson, parents may (if they wish) come in to meet with the director and sign the registration form. Most parents, however, make arrangements by telephone and meet the teachers and the director once lessons are scheduled. The $18.00 registration fee must be paid, however, and the registration form completed, before instruction can begin.

The registration charge covers costs of setting up a new file and contacting everyone concerned. Thereafter, if teaching is to begin, fees are based on the instructional hour or the time the teacher spends with the student. Most students come once a week to see the math teacher and once a week to see the verbal teacher. All teaching takes place at the Lamplighter. Students are asked to sign in at the front desk and pay for their lessons prior to instruction.

Different students require differing amounts of instructional help, but after a few sessions teachers should be able to give students or parents an idea of about how much time might be spent in preparing. Students are expected to study at home in addition to their sessions at the Lamplighter.

Parents may stop instruction without penalty by giving 24 hours' notice. Students do not register for a set number of lessons. The number of lessons depends on individual student need and communication between parents and teachers.

If necessary, cancellations for a particular lesson can be made at no cost with a day's notice. If progress is to be made, however, regular attendance (as arranged for) is necessary. Because teachers often come for a single student, and because other students may be waiting, we must have at least 24 hours' notice of any cancellation. This practice makes it possible to schedule another student.

The cost for each individual hourly lesson is $33.00, payable the same day as the lesson. Parents are asked to pay by check if at all possible. This practice facilitates good record-keeping.

PLEASE NOTE: There is a $10.00 charge for "no-shows" or late cancellations. The $10.00 fee is due prior to the next lesson. Also, THE LAMPLIGHTER RESERVES THE RIGHT TO STOP SEEING STUDENTS WHO HAVE CONSISTENT NO-SHOWS OR LATE CANCELLATIONS. We are here to serve students who are serious in their commitment to their studies.

We ask that you call us after your examinations, to let us know the results. Thanks.

Please call us at (513) 831-6344 if we can be of help.
